Search the DatabaseFor instructions on how to search the database, information about the Search Results, or maps of the former and amalgamated City of Hamilton click on any one of the hyperlinks below. For more detailed instructions go to Search Tips.
How to Search the DatabaseWe have provided two easy ways of browsing the postcard images by means of the SUBJECT and PUBLISHER/ PRINTER drop-down menus above. For an overview of the subject matter covered by the postcard images, see our Slide Show or browse through all of the postcards by leaving all of the search criteria blank and clicking the Search Database button. All of the images have been indexed by subject(s). Just click on a letter of the alphabet to bring up an alphabetical list of subject terms beginning with the letter, A, B, C, etc. Click on one or more terms, then click on the SEARCH DATABASE button above. For a more detailed cross-referenced list of subject terms see Search Tips. This subject menu does not contain any proper names (e.g. names of places, buildings, businesses, persons, etc.), which must be typed into the KEYWORD field. For more specific searches, enter a keyword, name or phrase into the KEYWORD field. To search by date, you may enter a date in either or both of the START and END boxes. Before attempting either of these two types of searches for the first time, it is recommended that you read the Search Tips for detailed instructions. About the Search ResultsThe Search Results page will display up to six thumbnails on one page. If there are more click on the NEXT button until you get to the last page. The NEW SEARCH button will then take you back to the Search the Database page. The title of the postcard appears below the thumbnail, if there was one printed or hand-written on the front of the postcard or printed on the back. If there was no title a brief description has been added, which appears in square brackets. Titles were transcribed with the same punctuation as found on the card; however, an X was inserted between words where commas or periods were missing (e.g. Hamilton Ontario Canada) but should have been inserted for readability or where the words were separated by spacing on the postcard. If a word was misspelled on the postcard title, the spelling was corrected and the changed letter(s) shown in square brackets. For an explanation of how postcard views based on the same photograph or rendition were grouped together in the Search Results, see Search Tips. City of Hamilton Maps
